The Washington Free Beacon reported, citing informed sources, that Hezbollah has expanded its presence in Venezuela and increasingly turned to drug trafficking to finance its operations following a reduction in financial support from the Islamic Republic of Iran.

According to the report, recent Israeli military successes against Iran and its proxy groups have weakened Tehran’s ability to fund Hezbollah, prompting the group to seek alternative revenue streams. As a result, Hezbollah operatives have increasingly relocated to Venezuela and are relying more heavily than ever on narcotics trafficking to generate income.

Marshall Billingslea, former U.S. Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorist Financing, testified in October before the U.S. Senate’s International Narcotics Control Caucus that more than 400 Hezbollah field commanders were ordered to transfer to Latin America, specifically Venezuela. These commanders reportedly joined approximately 11,000 Hezbollah-affiliated personnel who entered Venezuela between 2010 and 2019.

The Washington Free Beacon noted that while the Iran-backed group has long benefited from the Venezuelan government’s hospitality, its growing focus on drug trafficking suggests Hezbollah is actively seeking to secure financial resources independent of Tehran.
