The Guardian has named Zhino Babamiri, an exiled Iranian human rights activist, as its Inspirational Person of 2025 in recognition of her tireless efforts to save her father from execution and to campaign against the death penalty in Iran.

Babamiri, 24, has spent the past two years advocating for her father, Rezgar Beigzadeh Babamiri, a Kurdish farmer who was arrested in 2023 after helping injured protesters during Iran’s “Women, Life, Freedom” movement. He was later sentenced to death on charges that his family and human rights groups say were fabricated and based on a forced confession obtained under torture.

Living in exile, Babamiri has spoken openly about the fear and trauma faced by families of death row prisoners in Iran, where executions are often carried out without warning. Despite warnings to remain silent, she chose to speak out publicly, saying that silence failed to protect her father.

She co-founded Daughters of Justice, a campaign group formed by daughters of imprisoned men facing execution, and has led international advocacy efforts, including online campaigns and meetings with European officials, to draw attention to Iran’s use of the death penalty.

In naming her Inspirational Person of the Year, the Guardian highlighted Babamiri’s courage, persistence, and refusal to remain silent in the face of repression. The newspaper noted that her activism reflects a broader struggle for justice and accountability following Iran’s 2022 protests and ongoing human rights violations.

Babamiri has said her motivation comes from her father’s words: “Resistance is life.” She continues to campaign not only for his life, but for all those facing execution in Iran.
